Thanks for The Memories, Tempe Center
It’s hard to get sentimental about a strip mall, but this one has some
strong associations from my childhood: TeePee of Toys, 31 Flavors, TG&Y,
Tower Records, the El Rancho Market, Hills Books (then Books Etc.),
Revco Drug–and inseparable from it, Willy Lusier. Appetito’s (now
Sacks), Jams, Tempe Photo, and that sine qua non of Tempe citizenship:
Ray’s Barber Shop.
The east wing is being demolished…the beginning of the end. R.I.P.
