Wine Decline
Sadly, it can’t all be about the new light rail system today. Here is a piece from Bloomberg about a national trend: the trading down in wines by erstwhile connoiseurs who have suddenly acquired new traits of frugality and self-restraint. In Arizona, from the point of view of the F&B industry, this situation has been exacerbated by the criminalization of social drinking, and the state of fear that blankets even the most reasonable people at the prospect of being pulled over after only two cocktails:
Aficionados feeling the economic pinch are drinking cheaper wines, buying less or consuming what’s already in their cellars, slowing sales growth. [...]“Consumers are trading down,” he said. “Higher-priced wines are getting hurt because 40 to 60 percent are sold in restaurants. People aren’t springing for the big celebration.”
